(Laurel, Ind.) – Franklin County authorities are faulting an alleged drunk driver for causing fatal injuries to her 80-year-old boyfriend and passenger.
The Brookville American-Democrat newspaper reports Stephanie McKinney has been charged with Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated Causing Death (Class B felony); Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance Causing Death (Class B felony); and Failure to Stop After an Accident Resulting in Death (Class C felony).
Investigators allege McKinney, 40, had a BAC of .14 when she was at the wheel of a car on Old U.S. 52 on the night of Friday, April 20. The vehicle went off the road near State Road 121 and struck a tree.
A backseat passenger, McKinney’s brother David Morgan, was ejected from the vehicle. In the front seat, Henry Clay Hunter, was critically injured.
McKinney allegedly fled the scene in the wrecked vehicle, leaving Morgan behind and Hunter injured in the front seat. A firefighter who trailed McKinney said he believed she drove away at speeds near 100 MPH.
Firefighters and police tracked McKinney to her home in Laurel. Hunter was transported to Rush County Hospital in critical condition. He was later transferred to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
Hunter died of his injuries May 3.
Morgan was not seriously injured.
McKinney is in the Franklin County jail in Brookville. She faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
