(Plainfield, Ind.) - The Indiana High School Athletic Association will ask student athletes what they think of class basketball.
The IHSAA has been holding meetings around the state to gauge the public interest in returning to a single-class postseason tournament. The tour with IHSAA Commissioner Bobby Cox and State Sen. Mike Delph (R-Carmel), a big single-class proponent, visited Plainfield High School on Tuesday.
Response Tuesday, as well as two earlier meetings, has seen those fans in attendance largely in favor of reverting to the single-class tournament the state had prior to 1998.
A straw poll from the IHSAA’s first town hall in Fort Wayne showed a 28-14 vote in favor of single-class hoops. At a meeting Monday in Vincennes, the total was 30-17.
According to the Indianapolis Star, Cox said after Tuesday’s meeting that the organization will likely ask every boy and girl basketball player on a high school sectional roster to vote for either single-class or the current four-class system. The poll of players is a request of Delph’s.
Cox and Delph have eight more meetings scheduled, including one at Milan High School on Tuesday, May 1.
