(Florence, Ky.) - The Florence man said to be a person of interest in the murder of Aurora resident Leigh Jennings has been indicted on unrelated charges.
Charles “Steve” Stephenson was indicted by Boone County Commonwealth Attorney’s Wednesday on charges of tampering with evidence and trafficking in a controlled substance.
Stephenson, 58, had been arrested on those charges Friday, April 13 and has been held at the Boone County Jail since.
His arrest came as he was released from St. Elizabeth Hospital in Florence following a suicide attempt when police were about to question him April 6.
The indictment for the tampering with evidence charge says Stephenson committed the crime between March 29 and April 6. Aurora Police said last week Jennings was murdered on March 29, a Thursday.
Two of Jennings’ friends told media on Friday that the 67-year-old would have a male friend over to her apartment on Aspen Ridge Road for dinner on Mondays and Thursdays.
Indiana investigators have declined state whether or not Stephenson is a suspect in Jennings’ murder. He does not face charges in the murder.
Stephenson’s name has also risen around the murders of Bill and Peggy Stephenson, his aunt and uncle. The 74-year-old couple was found dead in their home on Ridge Edge Court in Florence last Memorial Day weekend.
The Stephenson murders have been unsolved without any arrests since the investigation began.
