President Obama Praises Lugar After Primary Loss

Richard Lugar

(Washington, D.C.) - Shortly after incumbent Senator Richard Lugar lost the Republican Senate primary in Indiana Tuesday, President Obama heaped praise upon the veteran lawmaker.

"As a friend and former colleague, I want to express my deep appreciation for Dick Lugar's distinguished service in the United States Senate," Obama said in a statement.

The President added that while the two didn't always agree on everything, he found that when he was in the Senate, Lugar "was often willing to reach across the aisle and get things done."

Obama emphasized that his efforts "to secure the world's most dangerous weapons has been based on the work that Senator Lugar began."
