Rapist, Jail Escapee Convicted By Jury

Stanley Short

provided/ISP

(Versailles, Ind.) - A Ripley County jury has convicted a Sunman man of raping a woman.

Investigators said Stanley Short held a woman in a Sunman apartment. He attacked the victim with a hammer before forcing her to have sex with him on May 25. The woman was able to escape and seek help.

Short was arrested a few days later.

Last week following a three day trial in Ripley Circuit Court, a jury returned a guilty verdict on all five charges Short faced: rape, criminal deviate conduct, criminal confinement, battery with a weapon and domestic battery.

Jurors took about three hours to return the guilty verdict, the Batesville Herald-Tribune reported.

The 42-year-old faces up to 129 years in prison when he is sentenced on June 4.

The rapists’ legal troubles are not over yet. Short was the subject of a manhunt in Ripley County last September after he and a fellow inmate escaped from the Ripley County Jail in Versailles.

Short was recaptured after two days on the run. He was found sleeping in a hopper near a relative’s home on State Road 48.
