Super PAC Dumps Lugar, Palin Backs Mourdock

(Indianapolis, Ind.) - Hoosiers will vote next week in the Republican primary, and while the presidential race is all but decided, a high-profile race is up for grabs for U.S. Senate.

Senator Richard Lugar on Friday lost the support of the Republican Super PAC American Action Network, with a spokesman telling Politico they have "decided to let this race play out."

Lugar did gain the endorsement of the Indianapolis Star newspaper on Sunday.

“Few leaders in recent decades have tackled such complex matters with as much thoughtfulness and vision as has Richard Lugar. He deserves the continued support of a party he's served faithfully and well,” the Star’s editorial board stated.

Also coming as a potential blow to Lugar's campaign was the high-profile endorsement of Sarah Palin for his opponent.  The former Republican vice presidential nominee is backing state Treasurer Richard Moudock's attempt to oust the veteran lawmaker.

“Senator Lugar’s 36 years of service as a Senator are appreciated, but it’s time for the torch to pass to conservative leadership in Washington that promises to rein in government spending now,” Palin said in her endorsement.

Indiana’s party primary election is Tuesday, May 8.
